I want to terrace a hill in my backyard

Do I start from the bottom up or the top down?

What are the best stone materials to build a terrace that is maintenance-free?

You must start from the bottom tier first. All wall material has designed specifications for maximum height. Start with this in mind and plan out your project before you begin. It is imparative to create the proper base. Skipping this will only create problems in the future.

Any brand of segmented wall material would be OK. Use the one you like. Always look at the actual stone ( the brochure pictures can be decieving) A maintenance free wall is a properly installed wall. Wall stone can be very heavy and hard work. If your not absolutly sure what you want to accomplish or have questions about the installation process. Professional on site advice will get you started in the right direction. The fee could save you alot of money and many hours of your hard labor if it has to be removed and done over agian.

Terracing a hill is a huge step in creating a nice landscape and we have a few around our property. I was fortunate enough to have family with heavy lifting equipment and other friends with stone companies to get them to help out. It's something i'd not try on my own for the size of the hills we terraced. My wife and I love to garden and work in the yard so for mothers day i got her a whole new set of gardening tools that im sure she is going to love
